Mozambique has a limited amount of data system availability over large parts of the country and the penetration of such services remains quite low. Like in most developing countries, the usage of mobile phones far exceeds landline phones due to a variety of factors. This is dependent upon where you are in the country as the rural areas are significantly less developed than the urban ones.

Telephone

Landline penetration in Mozambique is very low, with an estimated 88,000 lines in use as of 2011. With a serious lack of competition and infrastructure, Mozambique is reliant on only 1 company providing for all landline telephone services. Telecomunicacoes de Mocambique (TDM) is the former state sponsored telephony provider, which has since become a limited liability company as of 2002. Providing pre and post-paid telephone solutions as well as internet connectivity, TDM holds a total monopoly on all landline
communication systems.

Mobile phone coverage

Mozambique currently has limited coverage for mobile phones however does provide for both GSM (Global System for Mobile Coverage) and 3G coverage. Newer phones will be able to work in the country but be aware that poor signal in certain areas will mean that you effectively have no coverage.

Mozambique currently has 3 service providers, with the newest one coming into the market in 2012. The providers are:

• Mcel (majority owned by TDM)
• Vodacom (subsidiary of Vodafone)
• Movitel (the newest operator in the market)

All of these providers offer a range of services which include internet access, which is generally far more reliable than landline internet.

There are only 2 forms of mobile phone packages available in terms of different payment options. These are:

• Prepaid. This involves loading your phone with credit by purchasing credit vouchers
• Postpaid (proof of income and employment required to get such a contract).

Internet

Some great strides have been made in recent years in terms of providing faster and more reliable internet, which has been achieved through the establishment of undersea cables linking the country to other parts of the world. Unfortunately this type of internet access is still limited in terms of pricing and availability meaning that it is only the more affluent citizens who have access to it. This is borne out by the fact that an estimated 613,000 people had access to the internet as of 2009. Considering the population of the country, this is very low penetration rate.

Internet Service Providers

With such low penetration of internet in the country, the number of internet service providers is understandably on the low side. At present TDM accounts for most of the internet service provision, however a large number of consumers utilize their mobile phones for internet access. Surprisingly enough, Mozambique was the first country on the continent to offer a wireless internet service. The number of internet hosts is estimated at around about 89,000 as of 2012, making the number of computers available another limiting factor in how many people have internet access.
